The Biotechnology Centre was created in the year 2000 and grafted onto the Equipment Maintenance Centre. It has been a full fledged Centre since 2001. The Centre was established to provide central biotechnology laboratory facilities for the colleges in the University. It advices the university on biotechnological issues and build linkages with relevant external bodies. It is at present, accomodated in the building of the Colege of Animal Sciences (COLANIM, with a modest laboratory on the ground floor of the middle wing. Funds for the day-today running of the Centre are provided by the University. For equipment and consumables, the Cenre depends on grants from International and National bodies.

Affiliated with the Centre for research purposes, are about 20 scientist, making up what used to be 'he Biotechnology group', before the creation of the Centre. These scientists carry out their biotechnology - related projects in the Centre's laoratory and participate in her courses and other activities. The Director is resposible for the day-to-day running of the centre and is directly responsible to the Vice-Chancellor.

Its present major activities are:

Organising and running short laboratory-based courses in practical modern biotechnology for scientists from Nigeria and the West African Sub region. This is in order to help build up a critical mass of West African Scientists, competent in the new science, who would launch the sub-region into the recombinant DNA Technology whirlwind. There have been 6 such workshops, one each in 2000, 2001, and 2002, two in 2003 and one in 2004. Arrangements for 2005 workshop are already in progress. A new series of short courses for undergraduates has been stated in 2005. The first one took place in March and will hold twice in a session.

Considering all matters relating to the application of biotechnology for sustainable Agriculture.

Coordinating, and serving as a rallying point, for Biotechnological activities in UNAAB and its vicinity.

Carrying out both in-house and collaborative research in relevant areas of biotechnolgy.

Present Director of Biotechnology Centre is Prof. S.V.A. Uzochukwu (B.Sc., M.Sc. Ph.D.)
