Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics

This is the only separate Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics in the Nigerian University system to date. The department carries out investigations into potentials of indigenous and exotic livestock and stock improvement in the local environment. Courses are also taught in the relevant areas of livestock breeds and breeding and the genetics of livestock improvement among others.

Department of Animal Physiology

Animal physiology is a major discipline within Animal Science. Students are taught the basic principles of physiology and their applications to improve livestock productivity with emphasis on growth, reproduction, lactation, egg production and adaptation. The Department offers postgraduate programmes leading to Master of Agriculture(M.Agric) and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Animal Physiology. Courses in
applied techniques such as reproductive management, artificial insemination, and embryo transfer are given equal prominence with advanced courses in endocrinology, environmental physiology and reproductive physiology.

Department of Animal Production and Health

As the name of the Department implies, it emphasizes modern way of teaching and research in the production of agricultural animals. The Department also imparts scientific knowledge and carries out research ni agricultural animal health.

Department of Animal Nutrition

The department is devoted to the pursuit of scientific knowledge related to the feeds and feeding of all classes of animals of agricultural importance. The programme of the Department offers courses and conducts research in the areas of Monogastric and Ruminant Animal Nutrition, Feed Evaluation and Management. The facilities available to the Department include the college livestock farm composing of all species of livestock.

Department of Pasture and Range Management

Presently, the only separate department in Nigerian University system with programmes on the cheapest and most important feed resources essential for enhancing production of ruminant livestock. The teaching and research aspects of the department are therefore directed at increasing, improving and effectively utilizing the various forage resources.

The Department also services all the Departments and units involved with ruminant animal production.
