The Department of Agricultural Engineering was established during the phase II developmental stage of the University. It all began with an aggressive recruitment of qualified academic and technical staff and the mobilization of resources for infrastructures and essential equipments and machineries. The Department took off formally in the 2001/2002 academic session with the admission of 12 students into the 100 level basic science courses. The department has so far graduated two sets of Agricultural Engineers. The department also commenced post graduate training at Post graduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Engineering (M. Eng.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) levels in the 2008/2009 academic session.

PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy that guides the training of students in the Department is the production of skilled engineering manpower that is properly packaged and adequately furnished with comprehensive information required for providing scientific and engineering solutions to the nation’s agricultural and ecological problems with the aim of improving agricultural productivity, environmental sustainability and poverty reduction. Our graduates are trained to be self reliant and entrepreneurial in order to become job creators and not job seekers. This is achieved through the adoption of effective techniques of instruction and exposure to actual engineering practices.

OBJECTIVES
In view of the above, the following objectives have been set for the Department:

a.    To train Engineers that will be able to develop systems, processes and machineries that will aid the mechanization of all aspects of agricultural production and processing.

b.    Development of Agricultural Engineers who would be able to solve soil, water and bio – systems related problems, design and manage irrigation and land drainage systems.

c.    To train Engineers who will successfully establish and manage mechanized agricultural enterprises and crop/food processing industries.

d.    Training of students who are well grounded to proceed on advanced research and development work in Agricultural Engineering fields of specialization.
