The College of
Veterinary Medicine (COLVET) took off in the 2001/2002 session with
30 students that were offered admission into the 100 level of the
six-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree programme. The
College has a Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the following six
Departments:
1. Department of Veterinary Anatomy
2. Department of Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology
3. Department of Veterinary Pathology
4. Department of Veterinary Microbiology & Parasitology
5. Department of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery
6. Department of Veterinary Public Health & Reproduction
Department of Veterinary Anatomy
The
Department of Veterinary Anatomy was established in 2003. The
Department is responsible for teaching of courses in Veterinary
Anatomy, Histology, Radiation Biology and Applied Anatomy. In
collaboration with other Departments and Colleges in the University,
the Department participates in research activities towards improving
livestock and public health status.
Department of Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology
The
Department of Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology was established
in 2003. The Department is responsible for teaching of courses in
Veterinary Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Physiology,
Pharmacology, Chemotherapy, Pharmacy and Toxicology. In
collaboration with other Departments and Colleges in the University,
the Department participates in research activities towards improving
livestock and public health status.
Department of Veterinary Microbiology & Parasitology
The
Department of Veterinary Microbiology & Parasitology was established
in 2004. The Department is responsible for teaching of courses in
Veterinary Virology, Bacteriology, Mycology, Immunology,
Helminthology, Entomology and Protozoology. In collaboration with
other Departments and Colleges in the University, the Department
participates in research, diagnostic and clinical activities towards
improving livestock and public health status.
Department of Veterinary Pathology
The
Department of Veterinary Pathology was established in 2004. The
Department is responsible for teaching of courses in Veterinary
General Pathology, Gross Pathology, Histo-Pathology, Clinical
Pathology and Exfoliative Cytology. In collaboration with other
Departments and Colleges in the University, the Department
participates in research, diagnostic and clinical activities towards
improving livestock and public health status.
Department of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery
The
Department of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery was established in 2006.
The Department is responsible for teaching of courses in Food Animal
Medicine, Avian Medicine, Companion and Laboratory Animal Medicine,
Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Orthopaedic Surgery, Diagnostic
Imaging, Clinical diagnostic procedures and Management of various
medical and surgical disease conditions. In collaboration with other
Departments and Colleges in the University, the Department
participates in research, diagnostic and clinical activities towards
improving livestock and public health status.
Department of Veterinary Public Health & Reproduction
The
Department of Veterinary Public Health & Reproduction was
established in 2006. The Department is responsible for teaching of
courses in Meat, Milk and Fish Hygiene, Zoonoses and Environmental
Health, Disease distribution and prevention, Veterinary Obstetrics
and Gynaecology, Andrology, Artificial Insemination, Diagnosis and
management of reproductive disease conditions, udder health
management and small animal contraception. In collaboration with
other Departments and Colleges in the University, the Department
participates in research, diagnostic and clinical activities towards
improving livestock and public health status.
Veterinary Teaching Hospital
The
Veterinary Teaching Hospital was established in 2005. The various
Departments in the College under the umbrella of the Veterinary
Teaching Hospital render specialized Veterinary consultation,
clinical and diagnostic services to the livestock, agro-allied and
Public health sectors, the local community as well as the University
farm for the clinical aspects of the training programme.
