Prof. Akeredolu-Ale Holds Audience Spell Bound

Good delivery, display of emotions, cheers and pomp last Wednesday characterized the University’s 34th Inaugural Lecture, held at the Julius Amioba Okojie Lecture Theatre Complex.

As early as 2:00p.m, members of the University Community, family member, old school mates, especially from St. Theresa’s College, Molete, Ibadan, professional associates and senior colleagues of the Inaugural Lecturer, Prof. (Mrs.) Bolanle Idowu Akeredolu-Ale, had started arriving the sprawling JAO Lecture Theatre Complex.

As at 2:45pm, the venue had been jam-packed and filled to the brim.

An intimidating, long train of academic procession was a sight to behold comprising of members of staff, who had turned out massively from all sectors of the University.

The procession, had in its retinue, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun, whose entrance to the venue was greeted with a loud ovation.

The colourful occasion was also graced by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Chief Lawrence Ayinde Olakunle Osayemi, who led other members.

Also in attendance were the Director of the London Academy Business School for Higher Education, Dr. Larry Jones-Esan; English lecturers from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) and the Federal College of Education, Osiele, and Head, Department of Biochemistry, FUNAAB, Professor (Mrs.) Elizabeth Balogun, among others.

The mother of the Inaugural Lecturer, Alhaja Abibat Kassali; the lecturer’s spouse, Prof. Oladehinde Akeredolu-Ale; daughter, Precious Omorinola Oreoluwa were also present.

Professor (Mrs.) Akeredolu-Ale did justice to her task, holding her audience spell-bound with her flawless and eloquent delivery of the stimulating Lecture.

Our Return Is Ordained By God, Says Pro-Chancellor

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Governing Council, Chief Lawrence Ayinde Olakunle Osayemi, has described the return of the Council by the Visitor to the University, President Goodluck Jonathan, as “God-ordained”.

In a chat with FUNAAB Bulletin, while inspecting ongoing projects alongside other Council Members, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun and his Management team, Chief Osayemi said the return of the Council members was “an act of God and it is marvellous in our sight”.

Besides, the Pro-Chancellor disclosed that aside the spiritual angle, the Visitor to the University attributed their recall to their exceptional performance, revealing that out of 27 Governing Councils in the country, only 18, were returned.

According to Chief Osayemi, the Minister for Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, wrote a letter to him, informing of the reinstatement of the Council, based on its appreciable performances.

He stressed that while the Council was working round the clock with the Management to take FUNAAB to greater heights before its dissolution, the Chairman said little did he and members realize that they were being monitored from ‘above’.

Chief Osayemi pointed out that the lesson to learn from their reinstatement was that “Wherever you are, whatever you can lay your hands on, just be doing it as if there is no tomorrow, for another opportunity”.

He, on behalf of the Council, thanked the Management, staff, students and the entire members of the University Community for their support and cooperation.

The Pro-Chancellor assured the University Community and other stakeholders that the Council won’t rest on its oars, in its bid to take the University to the next level.

- Laud Children for Sustaining his Legacy

(L-R) Son of the late Alhaji Lateef Folarin, Rasheed, FUNAAB VC, Prof. Oluwafemi Balogun (holding mic), Council member, Mrs. Obioma Ezeozue and the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Chief Lawrence Ayinde Olakunle Osayemi (Right) commiserating with the bereaved family.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the University, Chief Lawrence Ayinde Olakunle Osayemi and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun, had commiserated with the Folarin family over the recent death of the Chairman/CEO of Lateef Folarin and Sons Construction Company, Alhaji Lateef Folarin.

The condolence came even as Chief Osayemi and Professor Balogun commended the sons of the deceased for continuing the good works of their father.

The late Folarin was one of the University’s Building Contractors, reputed by Management for executing quality work and ensuring prompt delivery.

The Pro-Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor extolled the good virtues of the deceased as they inspected the Female Hostels, part of which was contracted to the late Folarin’s company.

Chief Osayemi told the deceased son, Rasheed, who has taken-over activities at site, “I didn’t know your Daddy when he was alive but some people were saying I knew him. Even when he died, people were consoling me. The lesson to learn is that your good work will always sell you.

You are the first member of his (late Alhaji Folarin) family that I will see. We have fond memories of him, he always kept to his words when it comes to delivery of building contracts and he won’t bring the quality of the job down”, he added.

Speaking in the same vein, the Vice-Chancellor commended the sons of the late Folarin for sustaining their father’s good legacy.

According to him, “Before his death, he had done 75 per cent of the contract given to him, so we know where the job was before your father’s death. We know where it is now. You, the children have done exceptionally well by continuing your father’s good work, especially, in this Female Hostel. I have no doubt that they will hand-over by March 15”.

All On-going Projects Are Near-Completion

FUNAAB VC, Prof. Oluwafemi Balogun (holding mic), explaining some issues to the Pro-Chancellor, Chief Lawrence Ayinde Olakunle Osayemi (3rd Left) and other top officials of the University.

Strong indications have emerged that all things being equal, on-going projects, instituted by the present administration of the University, will be ready for commissioning before the expiration of the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun in May, this year.

Indications to this effect might not be unconnected with the fact that the contractors have improved tremendously on their performance, as compared to, when Management inspected the projects about two weeks ago.

In the same vein, the contractors have promised to deliver the projects within the next two weeks or at the latest, by the first week of May.

Situation Report:

FUNIS Access Road

According to the Director of Physical Planning Unit (PPU), Mr. Ayodele, surfacing of the road will be completed this week.

Shedding more light, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Balogun said, “We are experimenting on surfaced-dress road. If it works, we will extend it to INHURD”.

FUNIS Staff Quarters

According to Professor Balogun, the rationale behind the project is to bring members of staff of the School closer to their working place and the pupils because of the long distance to town.

The project is made up of two flats of 2-Bedrooms, each.

FUNAAB Staff School

The School building is made up of 24 classrooms, having 12 rooms each, on the first floor and on the ground floor. It has offices, two laboratories, and musical hall, among others.

The Director, PPU informed that when completed, it is expected to accommodate a maximum of 30 students in a class adding that fencing, using barb-wires had commenced.

He explained that security fencing for the School was imperative because “we realized this place is isolated”.

Speaking on the project, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Balogun said “the idea is to completely relocate our pupils since we have been given enough time by the Anglican Communion, to vacate their property”.

He informed that the School “is being built from Internally-Generated Revenue of the University and not from Federal Government grants”.

On the benefit of the project, he stated that “Everybody is now coming back to campus. This is the time we are going to have full welfare package for staff. At least, this will prevent some of our staff from taking their children to other schools,
